My main exposure to this sector has been through one major board effectiveness programme I delivered with a drinks business and through several senior leaders, I have supported in building their portfolio careers. In addition, I worked with a brewery on some board issues.
The conflict between the sales function and the marketing functions is very noticeable in this sector as these two can often be pulling in different directions.
I also noticed that NXDs who emerge from this tough sector surprisingly undervalue their potential perhaps because undervaluing talent is a hallmark of that world.
