About

My purpose (P) is to advise CEOs on managing their relationships with themselves, their senior leadership teams and stakeholders at times of significant change.

My strategy (S), since remission from cancer, is to help CEOs create an environment in which they, and the people they lead, find peace & joy at work most of the time, before they die. Or else, what’s the point? Seriously.

My behaviour (B) is to work with the interdependence of personal PSB of CEOs and organisational PSB.

My Approach

  • Understand the CEO’s PSB: purpose (P); strategy (S) and behaviour (B)

  • Understand the organisation’s PSB

  • Work with the interdependence of these PSBs in real time on top-of-mind issues, as they occur

  • Short trial engagement to test the relationship

  • Minimum six-month on-call monthly retainer online and in-person

  • Fixed fee monthly in advance

  • SLT facilitations/off-sites as required

CEO Needs

I find that CEOs need to:

  • address unresolved conflicts on the senior leadership team (SLT)

  • to find a shared purpose by all, not just some members of the SLT

  • get members to stop updating and start decision-making at SLT meetings

  • deal with the impact of new directors/NEDs on SLT relationships

  • address tensions arising on changes in structure, funding or in rapid growth

  •  reframe the relationship between the SLT and the main board

  •  have a regular sounding board for managing complex relationship issues

Background

Ciarán Fenton is a leadership consultant, board facilitator and writer/speaker on managing relationships at work, on ESG and on creating sustainable organisations.

His focus is on being an excellent sounding board for CEOs on their relationship management issues.

He facilitates improved decision-making on senior leadership teams and boards by exploring the interdependence between personal and organisational purpose, strategy and behaviour (PSB).

During his early career he held senior business leadership roles at Hachette, ITN, Pearson and The Guardian Media Group in which he was involved in change programmes.

Ciarán is a mentor at London Business School’s Entrepreneurship Summer School, and visiting lecturer at London Business School, London School of Economics, Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership and Queen’s University Belfast.

In 2022 he was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma, had extensive chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant leading to remission. He feels that experience changed him, his purpose and his approach to his work including his recently published book The Modern In-house Lawyer: Optimising Relationships for Growth & Success in an ESG Environment (Globe Law & Business, 2023) which he wrote during treatment.

He is working on his next book Most Mondays: How to Find Peace at Work, Most of the Time.

Ciarán holds a business degree from the National University of Ireland, Cork. He is married to the writer Marian Garvey. They have two adult children.
